We are happy to announce that the 5th edition of the CopyCamp Conference on the future of copyright in Europe will be held at Kinoteka in Warsaw, Poland and also be streamed online (UTC + 01:00) on the October 27 and 28, 2016. International artists and experts representing a variety of cultural institutions and businesses, non-governmental organizations, the media, academia, political and activist circles will meet at this conference to discuss copyright, its role and its future in a developing Europe.
The conference programme includes presentations by over 60 speakers. Among them are: new media researcher Olga Goriunova, Member of the European Parliament Therese Comodini Cachia, economist, and director of the New Media Studies Department at Szczecin Academy of Arts Mikołaj Iwański. You will also hear from interdisciplinary visual artist Jody Wood, musician Alicja Peszkowska, Rufus Pollock – economist and founder of Open Knowledge Foundation, Jonas Holm legal adviser for LIBER (Association of European Research Libraries), Michal Dubovan, legal advisor for the Czech Ministry of Culture. In the mornings, before conference proceedings commence, a series of 6 workshops will be run. Directed at artists and cultural producers, these will discuss strategies for income generation and internet promotion titled ‘How to make money but not sell out’. There will be sessions on data mining and opening data, and further sessions which will discuss the current European Commission proposals for copyright reform, as well as evidence-based copyright policy making.
During the conference the newly published book by Konrad Gliściński, which tackles the history of copyright, covering its formation, institutionalization, and documenting its changing rationale, will be presented. The book titled ‘All rights reserved. The history of copyright disputes. 1469-1928.’ will be available for purchase in Polish at the conference location and online through the website: https://prawokultury.pl/publikacje/, under a CC BY SA license.
The opening of the conference coincides with the publication of the Modern Poland Foundation’s position regarding the European Commission’s proposed guidelines for copyright reform (http://prawokultury.pl/newsy/kilka-uwag-o-propozycji-reformy-prawa-autorskiego-/), in addition to a report on the subject of copyright trolling in Poland, and the foundation’s recommendations for systematic change to legalise non-commercial sharing on the internet (http://prawokultury.pl/media/entry/attach/Fundacja_Nowoczesna_Polska_legalizacja_niekomercyjnego_dzielenia.pdf).
